Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 181988 Size: SH
  1. Install the oil filter to the engine block. Refer to the instructions on the oil filter for installation.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the oil pan drain plug to the oil pan.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the oil pan drain plug to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  6. Important: When performing an oil filter and oil change on a 6.5L diesel engine, use only 8 quarts of oil. This will bring the oil level between ADD and FULL, which is normal. Start the vehicle and wait until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Shut the vehicle off and wait a minimum of 15 minutes before checking the oil level. It should read Full or very close to Full. Do not check the oil level when the engine is cold, a false reading will occur. Adding engine oil to read FULL on a cold engine, could cause an oil consumption problem.

  7. Fill the crankcase with engine oil. Refer to the owner's manual for the appropriate grade.
