Starter Solenoid Does Not Click, Engine Does Not Crank

  1. Turn on the headlamps and the dome lamp.
  2. Turn the key to START.

  1. Remove the battery terminals from the battery and verify that the connections are clean and tight.
  2. Reconnect the terminals.
  3. Turn on the headlamps and the dome lamp.

If the battery is original equipment, check the state-of-charge indicator. (If an aftermarket battery has been substituted, use a voltmeter in order to determine the state-of-charge).

Is the green indicator dot showing (or battery voltage indicated as adequate)?

  1. Test the battery and electrical systems.
  2. Check for battery drain. Refer to Battery Load Testing and Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load.

  1. Attach a voltmeter to the battery posts.
  2. Measure the battery voltage during cranking.

Is the voltage greater than the specified value?

9.6V

  1. Test the battery.
  2. Test the starter relay.

  1. Connect a voltmeter to measure the voltage between the engine and the battery negative post (voltmeter positive lead on the engine block).
  2. Turn the key to START and observe the voltage.

  1. Clean and tighten the ground cable connections.
  2. Connect the voltmeter to measure the voltage between the engine and the battery negative post (voltmeter positive lead on the engine block).
  3. Turn the key to START and observe the voltage.

Does the voltmeter read more than the specified voltage during attempted cranking?

0.5V

Replace the battery ground cable.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect a voltmeter to measure voltage at starter terminal B.
  2. Turn the key to START and observe the voltage.

Does the voltmeter indicate more than the specified voltage?

9V

  1. Clean and tighten the positive battery cable connection.
  2. Connect the voltmeter to measure the voltage between the engine and the battery negative post (voltmeter positive lead on the engine block).
  3. Turn the key to START and observe the voltage.

Does the voltmeter indicate less than the specified value?

Replace the positive battery cable.

  1. Disconnect the solenoid connection at the starter.
  2. Connect a voltmeter to measure the voltage at the solenoid wire.
  3. Turn the key to START while observing the voltmeter.

Does the voltmeter measure battery voltage?

  1. With the solenoid wire disconnected, connect a voltmeter between the solenoid wire and the starter mounting bolts.
  2. Observe the voltmeter when the key is in START.

Clean the starter motor mounting bolts and the starter mounting surface in order to assure a good ground connection.

With the starter solenoid wire still disconnected, check the voltage at the ignition switch solenoid terminal with the key in START.

Is the voltage equal to the specified value?

Repair the starter control circuit from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid.
