Starter Replacement General

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the heat shield, if equipped.
  3. Disconnect the wires from the starter solenoid.

  5. Remove the bolts and the washers attaching the starter motor to the engine.
  6. Remove the starter motor.

  7. Object Number: 29049  Size: SH
  8. Clean the starter motor terminals and the electrical connectors.
  9. Inspect the pinion gear teeth for wear and damage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 29052  Size: SH
  1. Install the starter motor to the engine.
  2. Install the bolts and the washers attaching the starter motor to the engine.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Connect the wires to the starter solenoid.
  5. Install the starter heat shield, if equipped.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

Starter Replacement Relay

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 29047  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector or the wires from the relay.
  2. Remove the bolts attaching the relay to the frame rail (P92).
  3. Remove the relay.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 29047  Size: SH
  1. Install the relay in the vehicle.
  2. Install the bolts attaching the relay to the frame rail (P92).
  3. Connect the electrical connector or the wires to the relay.
