The P72 chassis is equipped with the 6.5L VIN F turbo diesel exhaust system. The exhaust system uses a flange and seal joint coupling to secure the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. The other connections use a slip-joint coupling design with a clamp and a U-bolt.

The P92 chassis is equipped with the 6.6L VIN 5 turbo diesel. The exhaust system uses wide band clamps on all the pipe joints. A heat shield is used to protect the fuel system components from the high temperatures of the exhaust system.

The exhaust systems are suspended by hangers attached to the frame members. This permits some movement of the exhaust system. This should not permit the transfer of noise and vibration into the vehicle.

The 6.5L VIN F turbo diesel uses a monolith oxidation catalytic converter for smoke reduction.

The 6.6L VIN 5 tubo diesel engine uses an oxidizing catalytic converter/muffler. The oxidizing catalytic converter/muffler is an emission control device in the muffler to reduce smoke (particulates). The oxidizing catalytic converter/muffler operates at normal exhaust system temperature. The temperature increases when the amount of particulates in the system increases. Refer to the Caterpillar 3116 diesel engine unit repair manual.
