Inspection Procedure

Caution: Wear protective goggles and gloves in order to avoid serious personal injury when removing exhaust parts.

    • Check for foreign objects trapped between either the lever and the stop peg or the actuator and the bracket.
    • Inspect the two mounting bracket bolts and the stop peg for tightness.
    • Inspect the clamp ring for tightness.
    • The following items must not be coated with any kind of dirt or debris.
       - The actuator pushrod end
       - The lip seal
       - The breather
       - The pivot

Inspect the exhaust pipes, the catalytic converter/muffler and the tailpipe. The following problems could result in a leaky exhaust system.

    • Cracked joints
    • Broken welds
    • Corrosion damage

Inspect the clamps, the brackets, and the insulators for cracks and stripped or corroded bolt threads.

The exhaust system and the heat shields must be free of leaks, binding, grounding and excessive vibration.

These conditions are usually caused by damaged or loose flange bolts, heat shields, brackets, and pipes. If any of these conditions exists, check the exhaust system components and the alignment. Align and replace as necessary.
