Engine Lacks Power and Has Black Smoke at Wide Open Throttle

Possible Cause

Correction

Restricted air filter

Replace the air filter.

Obstructed air intake duct to the turbocharger compressor wheel

Remove the obstruction(s).

Air leak in the compressor wheel inlet/outlet duct

Inspect the inlet/outlet ducts for loose connections. Tighten the connections and/or replace the damaged duct work.

No vacuum signal to the waste-gate actuator

Check for DTCs. Refer to Engine Controls.

Ruptured waste-gate actuator diaphragm

Refer to Waste-Gate Actuator.

Air leak between the intake manifold and the engine

Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

Exhaust gas leak between the cylinder head exhaust ports and the turbine inlet

Repair the leaks.

Damaged turbocharger

Find and correct the cause of the damage. Replace the turbocharger, if necessary. Refer to Turbocharger.

Fuel system problem

Refer to Engine Controls.
