Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the radiator and the fan shroud. Refer to Radiator Replacement (P72) in Engine Cooling.

  4. Remove the engine/transmission oil cooler.
  5. Remove the injection pump.

  7. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  8. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement (P72) in Power Steering Pump and Gear.

  10. Disconnect the exhaust pipes at the manifolds.

  12. Remove the flywheel cover.

  14. Remove the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.

  16. Remove the engine mount through-bolts.
  17. Disconnect the block heater wires.

  19. Remove the starter.
  20. Lower the vehicle.

  22. Remove the bellhousing bolts.
  23. Remove the air conditioning compressor (if equipped). Refer to Compressor (P72) in HVAC.
  24. Remove the oil fill tube upper bracket.
  25. Remove the wiring connector and the harness from the engine.
  26. Remove the air cleaner resonator and the bracket.

  28. Remove the transmission dipstick tube.
  29. Disconnect the heater hoses at the engine.
  30. Remove the generator upper bracket.
  31. Remove the glow plug temperature inhibit switch connector at the coolant crossover.

  33. Remove the coolant crossover/thermostat assembly.
  34. Use the following steps in order to remove the engine.
  35. 24.1. AttachJ 33888 to the center intake manifold bolt holes. The two pieces of the tool should extend between the cylinders.
    24.2. Support the transmission.
    24.3. Use a suitable lifting device to remove the engine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  2. 1.1. RemoveJ 33888 and the lifting device from the engine.
    1.2. Remove the transmission support.

  3. Install the engine mount through-bolts and nuts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the bellhousing bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to specifications. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications.

  7. Install the coolant crossover/thermostat assembly using new gaskets.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 42 N·m (31 lb ft).

  9. Install the generator upper bracket.
  10. Connect the heater hoses.
  11. Install the transmission dipstick tube.
  12. Install the air cleaner resonator and the bracket.
  13. Connect the wiring harness and the connector to the engine assembly.

  15. Install the oil fill tube upper bracket.
  16. Install the air conditioning compressor, if equipped. Refer to Compressor (P72) in HVAC.
  17. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  18. Install the starter.

  20. Connect the block heater wires.
  21. Install the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 33 N·m (65 lb ft).

  23. Connect the exhaust pipes.
  24. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering Pump and Gear.
  25. Lower the vehicle.

  27. Install the injection pump.
  28. Install the engine/transmission oil cooler.

  30. Install the radiator and the shroud. Refer to Radiator Replacement (P72) in Engine Cooling.
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32. Fill the cooling system with the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Draining, Filling, Recovery of Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  33. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system, if equipped. Refer to Charging in HVAC.
