Oil Pan Replacement Oil Pump

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the engine cover.
  3. Remove the engine oil dipstick.
  4. Remove the engine oil dipstick tube at the rocker arm cover.
  5. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  6. Remove the flywheel cover.
  7. Drain the engine oil.

  9. Disconnect the engine cooler lines at the block.
  10. Remove the starter.

  12. Remove the transmission.
  13. Remove the flywheel.

  15. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  16. Lower the oil pan from the engine.

  18. Rotate the crankshaft so that the forward crankshaft throw and the number 1 and 2 connection rod journals are up.
  19. Remove the oil pump at the bearing cap bolt
  20. Let the oil pump and the extension shaft fall into the oil pan.

  21. Remove the oil pan and the oil pan rear seal.
  22. Clean the old RTV from the oil pan and the block.
  23. Clean all the oil and the grease from the gasket surfaces.
  24. Inspect the oil pump pick-up tube and the screen for damage.
  25. Inspect the oil pump extension shaft bushing for cracks.

Installation Procedure

  1. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 in) bead of RTV sealant (GM P/N 1052915 or the equivalent) to the oil pan sealant surface, inboard of the bolt holes. The sealer must be wet to the touch when the oil pan is installed
  2. Install the oil pan rear seal to the oil pan.
  3. Perform the following procedure to install the oil pan, the oil pump and the extension shaft from the oil pan.
  4. Hold the oil pan and position the oil pump to the main bearing cap.
  5. Align the extension shaft hex with the drive hex on the oil pump drive. The oil pump should push easily into place.
  6. Install and tighten the oil pump.

  8. Position the oil pan against the engine.
  9. Connect the dipstick tube.
  10. Install the pan bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten all the bolts, except the rear two pan bolts, to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the two oil pan bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  12. Install the flywheel.
  13. Install the transmission.
  14. Install the starter.

  16. Connect the engine oil cooler lines.

  18. Install the flywheel cover.
  19. Install the engine oil dipstick tube at the rocker arm cover.
  20. Install the engine oil dipstick.
  21. Install the engine cover.
  22. Add the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Refer to Recommended Fluids and Lubricants in General Information.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
