Important: If you flush the hydraulic system on the P92 chassis with the 275 hp
engine option, have a new power steering filter ready to install as soon as
the draining fluid is clear.
- Remove the fluid return line at the pump inlet connector and plug the
connector port on the pump to prevent dirt from entering the system. Position
the line toward a large container to catch the draining fluid.
CAUTION:: Do not turn the steering wheel far enough to contact the wheel stops
or hold the wheel in a full left or right turn. The fluid flow will stop and
the pump will be in the relief pressure mode. A sudden overflow from the reservoir
may also develop if the wheel is held at a full left or right turn. Fluid
that spills on a hot engine could possibly cause a fire and result in serious
personal injury.
- While an assistant is
filling the reservoir with new power steering fluid, run the engine at idle
and turn the wheel from right to left.
- Continue the process until foreign material has cleared from draining
fluid. If foreign material is still evident, the individual components must
be flushed as outlined below:
3.1. | Install the fluid return line at the pump connector. |
3.2. | Fill the system with new power steering fluid. Bleed the system.
Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System. |
3.3. | Operate the engine for 15 minutes. |
3.4. | Remove the pump return line at the pump inlet and plug the connection
on the pump. |
- While you are replenishing the fluid in the reservoir, check the
draining fluid for foreign material. On the P92 chassis, install a new power
steering filter if the draining fluid is clear.
- If the fluid still shows foreign material, drain the system.
Fill the system with new power steering fluid. Bleed the system. Refer to
Bleeding the Power Steering System. Run the engine and check for foreign material.
- If foreign material is evident, replace all the hydraulic hoses
and repair or replace all the hydraulic components. Do not reuse any drained
power steering fluid.
- Disconnect the fluid lines in order to drain the hydraulic system.
Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stop. This may damage the
pump.
- With the engine off, turn the steering
wheel from stop to stop.
- Remove the hydraulic hoses.
- Drain all the hoses.
- Using compressed air, blow out fluid.
- Flush the hoses with new power steering fluid.
- Drain and use compressed air to blow out fluid.
- Connect the fluid lines and test the steering by using the following
steps:
8.1. | Set the parking brake. |
8.2. | Place the transmission in Neutral. |
8.3. | Start the engine and run at idle. |
| Caution: Do not touch the inner edges of the steering wheel spokes when testing.
If the power steering lines have been crossed by mistake, the steering wheel
may spin violently when it is turned, causing injury to the hands. In order
to stop the steering wheel from spinning, turn off the engine and make the
necessary corrections.
|
8.4. | Turn the steering wheel using the
palms of your open hands placed against the outer edge of the steering wheel. |
- Disconnect the hydraulic hoses at the control valve.
- Drain the valve.
- Flush with new, clean power steering fluid through each upper
port while turning the steering wheel one full turn (minimum) in each direction.
- Drain the valve and apply compressed air briefly in each port.
- Fill the valve with power steering fluid.
- Connect the hoses.
Important: Avoid contaminating the power steering system. Cap open lines and ports
to prevent dirt and debris from entering the system. Contaminated power steering
fluid can cause early parts failure.
- Disconnect the hydraulic hose connections.
- Cap the hose connections.
- Drain the pump.
- Fill the pump with new power steering fluid.
- Drain and check the fluid for foreign material.
- Drain and check the fluid for foreign material until the drained
fluid is free of foreign material.
- Connect the hydraulic hose connections.
- Fill the pump with fluid.
