Removal Procedure

    Notice: Do not hammer on the following parts:

       • The pitman arm
       • The pitman shaft
       • The steering linkage puller
    This action could cause damage to the pitman arm or steering gear.

  1. Position the front wheels and the steering wheel straight ahead.
  2. Important: To avoid contaminating the power steering system. Cap open lines and ports to prevent dirt and debris from entering system. Contaminated power steering fluid and dirt can cause early parts failure.

  3. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  4. Remove the hydraulic hoses from the steering gear.
  5. 3.1. Plug the hoses and the ports in order to prevent dirt from entering the system.
    3.2. Tag the hose location.

  6. Remove the cardan joint clamp bolt, the washer, and the nut.
  7. Remove the cardan joint from the steering gear stub shaft.

  8. Object Number: 24361  Size: SH
  9. Remove the upper steering gear mounting bolts and the nuts.

  10. Object Number: 24364  Size: SH
  11. Remove the lower steering gear mounting bolts, the washers, and the nuts.
  12. Remove the U-bolt, the washers, and the nuts.

  13. Object Number: 24367  Size: SH
  14. Remove the steering gear.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 24367  Size: SH
  1. Install the steering gear.

  2. Object Number: 24364  Size: SH
  3. Install the lower steering gear mounting bolts, washers, nuts, U-bolt, washers, and nuts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering gear mounting bolts to 155 N·m (114 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 135 N·m (100 lb ft)

  5. Install the upper steering gear mounting bolts and the nuts.

  6. Object Number: 24358  Size: SH
  7. Install the cardan joint to the steering gear stub shaft.
  8. Install the cardan joint clamping bolt, the washer, and the nut.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering gear mounting bolts to 155 N·m (114 lb ft).

  10. Install the hydraulic hoses to the steering gear.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the hose fittings to 38 N·m (28 lb ft).

  12. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  13. Bleed the system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.
