Power Steering Pump Replacement P72

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 25034-C Power Steering Pulley Remover

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Place a drain pan below the pump.
  3. Remove the pump belt.
  4. Disconnect the hoses at the pump. Raise the hose to prevent drainage of the oil.
  5. Cap or tape the ends of the hose and the pump to prevent dirt from entering the system.
  6. 5.1. Disconnect the reservoir hose at the pump. Cap the pump fittings.
    5.2. Remove and cap the remaining pump lines.

  7. Remove the pump mounting bolts, the nuts, and the brackets.

  9. Remove the pump assembly.

  11. Remove the pulley from the pump.
  12. 8.1. Install J 25034-C . Be sure that the pilot bolt bottoms in the pump shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.
    8.2. Hold the pilot bolt and turn the nut counter clockwise.

  1. Install the bracket to the pump

  2. Object Number: 24342  Size: SH
  3. Install J 25033-C on the pump.
  4. 2.1. Place the pulley on the end of the pump shaft and install J 25033-C . Be sure the pilot bolt bottoms in the pump shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.
    2.2. Hold the pilot bolt and turn the nut clockwise.
    2.3. Install the pulley flush ± 0.25 mm (0.010 in) with the end of the power steering pump shaft.

  5. Install the pump assembly and the attaching parts to the engine.
  6. Connect the power steering hoses to the pump. Hoses installed out of position may be subjected to chafing or other abuses during sharp turns. Refer to Power Steering Hoses.
  7. Important: 

    1. Do not start the engine with any power steering hoses disconnected.
    2. Connect the power steering hoses.
    3. Make sure there is clearance between the hoses and the drive belt, sheet metal, or other components where hose chafing or interference could result.
    4. Fill the reservoir.
    5. Bleed the pump by turning the pulley backward (counterclockwise as viewed from the front) until the air bubbles cease to appear.

  8. Tighten all fasteners. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications.
  9. Install the pump belt over the pulley. Check the alignment of the belt and the belt tensioner. Refer to Accessory Drive Belt in Engine Mechanical.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Fill and bleed the system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System.

Removal Procedure

    Important: Avoid contaminating the power steering system. Cap open lines and ports to prevent dirt and debris from entering the system. Contaminated power steering fluid can cause early parts failure.

  1. Remove the hydraulic hoses at the pump.

  2. Object Number: 24343  Size: SH
  3. Cap the hoses to keep dirt out of the system.
  4. Tag the hose locations.
  5. Remove the bolts and the washers.
  6. Remove the pump.
  7. Remove the gasket.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 24343  Size: SH
  1. Install the gasket.
  2. Install the pump.
  3. Install the washers and the bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 73 N·m (55 lb ft)

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the hydraulic hoses.
  6. Install the power steering fluid.
