Rattle in Power Steering Gear

Check the gear on the frame.

Is the gear loose on the frame?

Check the gear mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to the specifications.

Does the rattling or chuckling in the steering gear continue?

Check the power steering pressure hose.

Is the pressure hose touching other parts of the vehicle?

Adjust the hose position. Do not bend the tubing by hand.

Check the steering linkage.

Is the steering linkage loose?

Check the steering linkage pivot points for wear. Replace the steering linkage pivot points if necessary.

Check the pitman arm.

Is the pitman arm loose?

Torque the pitman arm nut to specifications.

250 N·m (185 lb ft)

Check the over-center adjustment. An increased clearance off the high point causes a slight rattle. The slight rattle is normal. Do not reduce the clearance below the specified limits in order to eliminate this slight rattle.
