Wheel Surges or Jerks When Turning

DEFINITION: A steering wheel that surges or jerks when turned with the engine running. This symptom occurs especially during parking.

Check the oil level in the power steering pump.

Is the oil level low?

  1. Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Refer to Locating Fluid Leaks .
  2. Repair any leaks that you find.
  3. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir:
  4. 3.1.  Stop the engine.
    3.2. Add the power steering fluid. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in General Information.
    3.3. Fill the reservoir to the proper fill level shown on the dipstick.

Does the steering wheel continue to surge or jerk?

Check the pump drive belt.

Is the pump drive belt loose?

Inspect the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical.

Check the control valve.

Is the control valve sticky?

Clean or replace the control valve.
