NOTE: PER MIKE AT GM SPECIAL PARTS ASSISTANCE DIPSTICK P/N 14085794
HAS BEEN SUPERSEDED BY P/N 14092376. 4/18/86.
SOME 1982-84 P3500 MOTOR HOME CHASSIS WITH THE 7.4L (454) ENGINE MAY
INDICATE AN OVERFILL CONDITION ON THE DIPSTICK AFTER AN OIL CHANGE.
THE OWNER'S MANUAL SPECIFIES THAT THE 7.4L (454) ENGINE HAS AN OIL
CAPACITY OF SEVEN QUARTS. HOWEVER, AFTER THE OIL IS CHANGED, THE
PROPER AMOUNT OF OIL ADDED, AND THE ENGINE MAY APPEAR TO BE OVERFILLED
BY ONE QUART.
DUE TO DIPSTICK LOCATION AND CONFIGURATION ON THIS MODEL VEHICLE, THE
DIPSTICK TUBE IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MEASURE AND CONFIRM THAT IT IS
CORRECT; THEREFORE, TO DETERMINE THE ACCURACY OF THE DIPSTICK, RUN THE
ENGINE UNTIL IT REACHES NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE. SHUT OFF ENGINE
AND LET VEHICLE SET FOR 10-15 MINUTES. THE VEHICLE MUST BE ON A LEVEL
SURFACE. REMOVE THE OIL PAN DRAIN AND LET OIL DRAIN FOR 7-10 MINUTES.
REPLACE THE OIL FILTER. DO NOT PREFILL THE NEW OIL FILTER. REINSTALL
THE DRAIN PLUG AND ADD SEVEN QUARTS OF OIL TO THE ENGINE. RESTART THE
ENGINE AND LET VEHICLE STAND 10-15 MINUTES. REMOVE DIPSTICK AND CHECK
OIL LEVEL. IF THE OIL LEVEL IS 1/4" - 3/8" OVER THE FULL MARK ON THE
DIPSTICK, THEN A NEW DIPSTICK, P/N 14085794. AND DISPSTICK TUBE
ASSEMBLY, P/N 14085796, SHOULD BE INSTALLED. AN "O" RING SEAL, P/N
274244, MUST ALSO BE USED WHEN REPLACING THE TUBE ASSEMBLY (SEE
ILLUSTRATION #1).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional
technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform
those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or
to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a
vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools,
safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely.
If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies
to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See
a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors
vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from
the information.
