Effective with 1987 model year vehicles, a new axle vent hose bracket is being used in production that will reduce the amounts of dirt and water enter- ing the axle housing and reduce the chances of premature axle wear in severe duty operations.
Prior model year vehicles can be changed by installing tbe new vent bose bracket listed below. Refer to Figure No. 1 and Figure No. 2 for installa- tion information. Figure No. 1 is "typical". Depending on axle capacity, the vent hose routing to the bracket can be from eith er the left or right hand side.
Prior to changing the axle vent, remove axle cover and inspect for contamination. If water or dirt are present, flush out axle housing, ring and pinion with a suitable solvent such as choke cleaner (GM Part Number 12345109) or equivalent. Reinstall housing cover and gasket and refill housing with the lubricant specified in the light Duty Truck Service Manual or Maintenance Schedule.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
