Subject: | Rattle Pop Knock Type Noise From "A" Pillar Area |
Models: | 2003-2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic |
2003-2007 GMC Sierra Classic |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Some customers may comment on a rattle, pop, or knock type noise while driving on uneven road surfaces. In most cases, driving at slow speeds in a parking lot that has cracks in the asphalt will duplicate the noise. The noise may sound like the concern in bulletin 06-08-61-003A. This noise may be caused by metal to metal contact between the fender and cowl. The concern may be present on the left, right or both sides. The area that is contacting can be difficult to see with the fender in place. While looking at the wheel well opening it will be near the 2 O'clock position on the left side and the 10 O'clock position on the right side. With the fender removed look for witness marks like shown below.
(1. Contact With Fender)
(2. Contact With Fender)
To correct this concern remove the fender and provide additional clearance by dimpling the cowl sheet metal with a hammer.
Note: In some cases, this additional clearance may be obtained without the removal of the fender. From the engine compartment, the contour of the fender inner sheet metal can be seen as it follows the contour of the cowl. Insert a long straight tip pry bar between the cowl and inner sheet metal of the fender to pry the sheet metal apart.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
