Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Right Side Drum Brakes

Tools Required

J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1471613  Size: SH
  1. Ensure that the park brake is released.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Relieve tension on the park brake cables by pulling down on the front park brake cable (1) just in front of the equalizer.
  4. Remove the right park brake cable (2) from the equalizer.
  5. Remove the park brake cable from the frame bracket and guides.

  7. Remove the cable clip bolt (1) at the rear axle housing.
  8. Remove the right cable (3) from the clip on top of the rear axle housing.
  9. Remove the rear brakes shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .

  11. Using the J 37043 (1), remove the park brake cable.

  12. Object Number: 1471719  Size: SH
  13. Remove the park brake cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1471719  Size: SH
  1. Install the park brake cable to the backing plate.
  2. Install the rear brakes shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Position the cable clip (2) to the rear axle housing.
  5. Install the cable clip bolt (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  7. Install the right cable (3) over the clip on top of the rear axle housing.

  9. Install the park brake cable through the frame bracket and guides.
  10. Install the right park brake cable (2) to the equalizer.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Adjust the park brakes. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .

Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Right Side Disc Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Release the park brake.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .

  5. Object Number: 791349  Size: SH
  6. For all 15 series vehicles, relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer and removing the right park brake cable from the equalizer bar.

  7. Object Number: 913335  Size: SH
  8. For 25/35 series vehicles, disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling .
  9. For 25/35 series vehicles, disconnect the cable at the equalizer.

  10. Object Number: 366864  Size: SH
  11. Remove the bolt from the rear axle clip.
  12. Remove the cable from the differential clip.

  13. Object Number: 363839  Size: SH
  14. Remove the cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.

  15. Object Number: 913334  Size: SH
  16. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable (2) from the backing plate (4):
  17. 11.1. Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
    11.2. Depress the locking tabs.
    11.3. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate (4).
    11.4. Remove the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
  18. Remove the park brake cable (2) from the lever (1).
  19. Remove the cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the cable to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 913334  Size: SH
  3. Install the park brake cable (2) to the lever (1).
  4. Perform the following procedure to install the cable (2) to the backing plate (4):
  5. 3.1. Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
    3.2. Route the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
    3.3. Push the cable housing into the backing plate (4) until the locking tabs snap into place.

  6. Install the cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place.

  7. Object Number: 366864  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Bolt the cable to the differential clips.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

    Important: After installing the cable to the rear axle holding clip, verify that clip is securely retaining the cable. If not, crimp the clip by hand taking care not to pinch or kink the cable.

  10. Install the cable to the differential clip.
  11. For 25/35 series vehicles, connect the cable at the equalizer.

  13. For 25/35 series vehicles, enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling .

  14. Object Number: 791349  Size: SH
  15. For all 15 series vehicles, pull down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer and install the left park brake cable to the equalizer bar.
  16. Remove the safety stands.
  17. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  18. Adjust the park brake cable. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .
