Steering Gear Worm Gear Adjuster Seal and Stub Shaft Bearing Replacement 700 Gear

Tools Required

    • J 42882 Adjuster Nut Socket
    • J 43435 Adjuster Lock Nut Wrench

Disassembly Procedure


    Object Number: 509348  Size: SH
  1. Rotate the stub shaft back and forth in order to drain the power steering fluid.
  2. Remove the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut from the steering gear housing using J 43435 and a torque wrench.

  3. Object Number: 322012  Size: SH
  4. Remove the adjuster nut assembly (2) from the steering gear housing (1) using J 42882 .

  5. Object Number: 322011  Size: SH
  6. Remove the thrust support assembly (2) from the steering gear housing (1).
  7. Remove the O-ring seal (3) from the thrust support assembly (2).

Assembly Procedure


    Object Number: 322011  Size: SH

    Important: Install a new O-ring seal each time the thrust support assembly is removed from the steering gear.

  1. Lubricate the new O-ring seal (3).
  2. Install the new O-ring seal (3) on the thrust support assembly (2).
  3. Install the thrust support assembly (2).

  4. Object Number: 322012  Size: SH
  5. Connect the adjuster nut assembly (2) to the steering gear housing (1) using J 42882 .
  6. Install the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut (1) to the adjuster nut assembly.
  7. Refer to Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle to adjust the thrust bearing preload.

  8. Object Number: 509352  Size: SH
  9. Hold the adjuster nut assembly in position to maintain alignment of the marks.
  10. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  11. Tighten the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut using J 43435 and a torque wrench.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the retainer and the lock nut to 109 N·m (80 lb ft).
