General Motors has become aware of a condition on 1985 and some 1986 C/K Model Light Duty Trucks where the windshield washer pump motor, located behind the plastic reservoir, may become corroded and shorten the life of the motor. A crimp between the inner and outer fender could divert water onto the pump during a car wash or heavy rain or overfilling of the washer jar could cause drenching of the pump motor, thus causing the pump motor to corrode.
To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, involved owners will be mailed a plastic shield to be installed on the reservoir to prevent the possibility of water entering the pump.
In addition, a special policy adjustment will be provided on the washer pump for 5 years from vehicle in-service date on all involved vehicles.
Involved are all 1985 C/K model trucks and certain 1986 C/K model trucks built within the following V.I.N. breakpoints.
If your dealership has vehicles involved in this Campaign, you will receive a VIN listing, and a moisture deflector shield for each vehicle for which there is no owner of record. If a vehicle has been recently delivered, and the owner's name is not on your VIN listing, please contact the owner to have the shield installed. It is your responsibility to see that the shields are installed on recently sold vehicles.
The specific vehicles involved in this campaign have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. These listings are furnished to all involved dealers with the campaign bulletin.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer, and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.
If no owner's name and address were available to GMC Truck at the time of campaign initiation, the dealer will determine the owner's name and address from the dealership sales records. Please provide this information directly on the second copy of the listing next to the applicable VIN, so that our records may be updated and the appropriate notification mailed to the owner. This second copy should then be submitted to the address listed below in the previously supplied yellow campaign envelopes.
GMC Truck General Motors Corporation 101 Union Street Plymouth, Michigan 48170
Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by GMC Truck (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin). A listing of owner names and addresses has been furnished to the involved dealers to enable dealers to follow up with owners involved in this campaign. This listing may contain owner names and addresses obtained from state motor vehicle registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to this campaign.
A windshield washer reservoir moisture deflector shield and installation instructions have been sent directly to owners of record. Owners may install the shield or they may ask a dealer to do the service. Dealer service is to be done at no charge to owners.
If the windshield washer pump on the vehicle fails due to corrosion, install a new pump. This Special Policy will be in effect within a period of five years from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service. The pump will be replaced at no charge to the owner.
If the owner had previously encountered a failed washer pump due to corrosion, the dealer is to reimburse the vehicle owner with proper docu- mentation; original paid receipts or invoices verifying expenses incurred for such repairs. The dealer in turn will submit a warranty claim to GMC Truck to pay for the owner's reimbursement. This Bulletin contains a Special Policy and should be filed in the three-ring binder furnished each dealer by General Motors Corporation in September, 1982.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.

Dear GMC Truck Owner:
General Motors has become aware of a condition on 1985 and some 1986 C/K Model Light Duty Trucks where the windshield washer pump motor located behind the plastic reservoir may become corroded and shorten the life of the motor. A crimp between the inner and outer fender could divert water onto the pump during a car wash or heavy rain or overfilling of the washer jar could cause drenching of the pump motor, thus causing the pump motor to corrode.
To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on your vehicle, a moisture deflector shield has been included with this notice. Installation of this shield will divert water/washer fluid away from the pump motor assembly. Please follow the Service Procedure outlined on the back of this letter for the proper installation of this shield. Your GMC truck dealer will install the shield for you at no charge if you so desire.
We urge you to install or have this shield installed as quickly as possible in order to avoid damage to the washer pump.
If, due to corrosion, the windshield washer pump on your vehicle should need to be replaced within a period of five years from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, GMC Truck will replace the pump at no charge. In the event your GMC truck encounters a failure within the time stated above, please contact your GMC dealer. Instructions have been furnished to GMC dealers for repairing the conditon and handling this Special Policy. Parts are currently available through your dealer.
If you have previously encountered these conditons and paid for all or part of the repairs, you should contact your GMC dealer, who will advise you with regard to obtaining reimbursement. You should present the dealer with your original paid receipts or invoices verifying expenses incurred for such repairs.
We suggest you retain this letter and store it in the glove compartment, along with the Owner's Manual, Maintenance Guide, and Warranty Folder.
The enclosed Owner Reply Card identfies your vehicle. Presentng the card to your dealer will assist in completing the services in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please complete the postage-paid card and return it to us. This will assist us in notfying other affected owners.
GMC is taking this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
