Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  4. Remove the upper radiator hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove both heater hoses. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC.
  6. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  7. Remove the distributor cap. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Remove the coolant bypass hose from the water pump. Refer to Heater Water Bypass Valve Replacement in HVAC.
  9. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  10. Remove the A/C compressor from the mounting bracket, if equipped, and set it aside.
  11. Important: It is not necessary to evacuate the A/C refrigerant. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.

  12. Remove the wiring bracket from the rear of the cylinder head.
  13. Disconnect the accessory bracket and slide it forward.
  14. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  15. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  16. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  17. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.

  19. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket using the following procedure:
  20. • Disconnect the electrical connector from the power steering pump.
    • Remove the two nuts holding the power steering pump to the engine.
    • Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket bolts and the nut.
    • Slide the power steering pump mounting bracket forward with the power steering pump still attached.
    • Set the power steering pump and the mounting bracket aside.
    • Remove the stud.
  21. Disconnect the wiring bracket from the rear of the right cylinder head.

  23. For the right side cylinder head, remove the following components:
  24. • Generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • Oil indicator tube bracket bolt.
  25. Remove the generator mounting bracket using the following procedure:
  26. • Remove the one nut.
    • Remove the three bolts.
    • Slide the mounting bracket off of the stud.
    • Remove the stud.

  27. Remove the sixteen cylinder head bolts.
  28. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal (Right) .
  29. Clean all sealing surfaces. Refer to Cylinder Head Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 11482  Size: SH
  1. Install the cylinder head.
  2. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation (Right) .

  3. Install the valve rocker arms and the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 188295  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. For the left side cylinder head, install the power steering pump mounting bracket using the following procedure:
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    • Install the stud to the cylinder head.

    Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    • Loosely assemble the mounting bracket over the stud.
    • Install a nut to the stud finger tight.
    • Install the three bolts finger tight.
    • Install the two nuts to the power steering pump finger tight.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts and bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

    • Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.
    • Connect the electrical connector to the power steering pump.

  7. For the right side cylinder head, install the generator mounting bracket using the following procedure:
  8. • Install the stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

    • Loosely assemble the generator mounting bracket over the stud.
    • Install a nut to the stud finger tight.
    • Install the three bolts finger tight.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts and bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

    • Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • Oil indicator tube bracket bolt.
    • Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
    • Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
    • Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
    • Install the wiring bracket to the rear of the cylinder head.
    • Connect the accessory bracket.
    • Install the A/C compressor, if equipped. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
    • Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
    • Install the distributor cap Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • Install both heater hoses. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC.
    • Install the upper radiator hose Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
    • Refill the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
    • Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
