Removal Procedure

Tools Required
J 41427 Universal Lift Brackets

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Sheet Metal.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  4. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the following coolant hoses:
  6. • Remove the upper radiator hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • Remove the lower radiator hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • Remove both heater hoses. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Remove the upper and lower radiator shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  8. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  9. Disconnect the throttle cable and the cruise control cable, if equipped. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Engine Controls.
  10. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  11. Remove the air conditioning compressor, if equipped, and set it aside. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector from the power steering pump.
  13. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.

  15. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket using the following procedure:
  16. • Disconnect the electrical connector from the power steering pump.
    • Remove the nuts holding the power steering pump to the engine.
    • Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket bolts and the nut.
    • Slide the power steering pump mounting bracket forward with the power steering pump still attached.
    • Remove the stud.
    • Set the power steering pump and the mounting bracket aside.
  17. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  18. Remove the starter opening cover.
  19. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the top of the engine.
  20. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  21. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts, if equipped. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement in Trans/Transaxle.
  22. Disconnect the transmission cooler pipe bracket from the right side of the oil pan, if equipped. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Trans/Transaxle.
  23. Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds .Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  24. Support the transmission with a suitable strap.
  25. Remove the engine oil cooler pipes, if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  26. Remove both engine mount through-bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  27. Remove seven transmission to engine bolts including the brackets. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Tranmission/Tranaxle.
  28. Lower the vehicle.
  29. Disconnect the remaining electrical connectors.
  30. Remove the distributor cap. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  31. Remove the engine harness support.
  32. Disconnect the fuel pipes. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  33. Remove two transmission to engine bolts at the top of the engine.

  35. Remove the EGR pipe. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Pipe Replacement in Engine Controls.

  36. Object Number: 66496  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  37. Attach the J 41427 to the left front and right rear intake manifold mounting bolts, using the following procedure:
  38. • Remove the right rear lower intake manifold bolts.
    • Install the J 41427 marked RIGHT REAR.
    • Install the retaining bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

    • Remove the left front lower intake manifold bolts.
    • Install the J 41427 marked LEFT FRONT with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
    • Install the retaining bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  39. Attach a suitable lifting device to the lift brackets.
  40. Remove the engine.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  2. Install two top transmission to engine bolts, including the brackets and clips.
  3. Remove the J 41427 and the lifting device.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Reinstall the intake manifold bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  7. Install the EGR pipe. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Pipe Replacement in Engine Controls.
  8. Connect the fuel pipes. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  9. Install the engine harness support.
  10. Install the distributor cap. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  11. Connect the engine harness.
  12. Install the remaining seven transmission to engine bolts. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  13. Install both engine mount through-bolts, if equipped. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  14. Install the oil cooler pipes, if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  15. Remove the transmission support strap.
  16. Install the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  17. Install the transmission cooler pipe bracket to the right side of the oil pan, if equipped. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Transmissions/Transaxles.
  18. Install three torque convertor to flywheel bolts, if equipped. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  19. Install the starter opening shield.
  20. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  21. Connect the positive battery cable at the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  22. Connect the engine harness to the top of the engine.

  24. Install the power steering pump mounting bracket using the following procedure:
  25. • Loosely assemble the mounting bracket over the stud.
    • Install a nut to the stud finger tight.
    • Install the three bolts finger tight.
    • Install the two nuts to the power steering pump finger tight.

    Tighten
    Tighten the nuts and bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

  26. Install the air conditioning (A/C) compressor, if equipped. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
  27. Connect the electrical connector to the power steering pump.
  28. Use the J 25033-C in order to install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering.
  29. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  30. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  31. Connect the throttle cable and the cruise control cable, if equipped .Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Engine Controls.
  32. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  33. Install the upper and lower radiator shrouds. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  34. Install the following coolant hoses:
  35. • The upper radiator hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • The lower radiator hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
    • Both heater hoses. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC.
  36. Fill the engine with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  37. Install the hood. Refer to Hood Replacement in Sheet Metal.
  38. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  39. Before starting a new engine, or one that has been repaired. Refer to Engine Set-Up and Testing .
