Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.

  2. Object Number: 176070  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness from the clips, and move the harness aside.
  5. Remove the following components for access to the right valve rocker arm cover:
  6. The air cleaner intake duct. Refer toAir Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls
  7. The crankcase vent hose
  8. The oil level indicator tube bracket. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  9. Remove the following components for access to the left valve rocker arm cover:
  10. • The air conditioning compressor, if equipped, and lay it aside. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
    • The EGR valve inlet pipe. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
    • The PCV and the hose
    • The vacuum brake booster pipe, if equipped, and move it aside
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover and the gasket. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Removal (Right) .
  13. Clean all traces of old gasket from the valve rocker arm cover and the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 68709  Size: SH
  1. Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Installation (Left) .
  2. Install the components as follows for the left valve rocker arm cover:
  3. • The air conditioning compressor. Refer to Condenser Replacement in HVAC.
    • The EGR valve inlet pipe. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls.
    • The PCV and the hose
    • The vacuum brake booster pipe
  4. Install the components as follows for the right valve rocker arm cover:
  5. • The air cleaner intake duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
    • The crankcase ventilation hose.
    • The oil level indicator tube bracket. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  6. Install the wiring harnesses to the valve rocker arm cover clips.
  7. Install the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  8. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable
