J 36857 Engine Lift Brackets

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the hood.
  2. Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the air cleaner duct and resonator from the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement or Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  5. Remove the ignition coil from the intake manifold. Refer to Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement in Engine Controls.
  6. Remove the electrical connector at the distributor. Refer to Distributor Replacement in Engine Controls.
  7. Remove the fuel supply lines from the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement .
  8. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the air conditioning compressor from the engine block. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
  10. Remove the radiator from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  12. Remove the accelerator cable from the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  13. Remove the cruise control cables from the throttle body if equipped. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  14. Remove the vacuum lines from the engine.
  15. Remove the electrical connector from the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .
  16. Remove the generator from the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Remove the engine electrical harness and tie out of the way.
  18. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  19. Remove the hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Power Steering
  20. Remove the front propeller shaft if equipped. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Driveline and Axle.
  21. Remove the ground wires from the engine block. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  22. Remove the starter motor from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  23. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transmission if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  24. Remove the bolts from the torque convertor to the flywheel if equipped. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  25. Remove the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  26. Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.
  27. For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  28. For the manual transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  29. Remove the engine auxiliary oil cooler lines from the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  30. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  31. Support the transmission with a suitable jack. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  33. AttachJ 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  34. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N  15650963.
  35. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  36. Remove the front engine mount through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Front) .
  37. Remove the engine with a suitable lifting devise.
  38. Remove the generator mounting bracket from the engine block.
  39. Remove the air conditioning compressor/power steering mounting bracket from the cylinder head.
  40. Remove the lift brackets from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  1. AttachJ 36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head.
  2. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N  15650963.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  4. Attach J 36857 to the left front cylinder head.
  5. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N  15650963.

    Tighten
    Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  6. Install the engine into the vehicle.
  7. Install the engine mounting through bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement (Front) .
  8. Remove the engine lift hooks from the cylinder head.
  9. Install the air compressor/power steering mounting bracket to the engine block.
  10. Install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement In Engine Electrical.
  11. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.
  13. • For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
    • For the manual transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  14. Install the ground straps to the engine block. Refer to Engine Ground Strap Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  15. Install the hoses to the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement in Power Steering.
  16. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  17. Install the convertor pan cover to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement or Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  18. Install the starter to the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  19. Install the oil cooler lines to the engine block if equipped. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  20. Install the exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  21. Install the front propeller shaft (4WD). Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement in Driveline and Axle.
  22. Lower the vehicle.
  23. Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail. Refer to Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement .
  24. Install the ignition coil to the upper intake manifold.
  25. Install the electrical connector to the distributor. Refer to Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  26. Install the electrical connector to the EGR valve. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .
  27. Install the electrical connectors to the throttle body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  28. Install the accelerator cable to the Throttle Body. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  29. Install the vacuum lines to the engine.
  30. Install the generator to the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  31. Install the air conditioning compressor to the air conditioning/power steering mounting bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in HVAC.
  32. Install the engine electrical wiring harness to the engine.
  33. Install the radiator to the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  34. Install the Air Cleaner Duct and Resonator to the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement and Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  35. Fill the radiator with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  36. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC.
  37. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
  38. Close the hood.
