Brake Backing Plate Replacement Duo-Servo Drum Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the linings. Refer to Brake Lining Replacement .
  2. Remove the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 156762  Size: SH
  4. Remove the bolts.
  5. Remove the washers.
  6. Remove the backing plate.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 156762  Size: SH
  1. Install the backing plate.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolts and the washers.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 160 N·m (118 lb ft).

  5. Install the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .
  6. Install the linings. Refer to Brake Lining Replacement .
  7. Adjust the brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  8. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.

Brake Backing Plate Replacement Leading/Trailing Drum Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the linings. Refer to Brake Lining Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 236  Size: SH
  3. Remove the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 156762  Size: SH
  5. Remove the bolts.
  6. Remove the washers.
  7. Remove the backing plate.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 156762  Size: SH
  1. Install the backing plate.
  2. Install the washers.
  3. Install the bolts.
  4. Install the wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .
  5. Install the Linings. Refer to Brake Lining Replacement .
  6. Install the adjust brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  7. Bleed the brakes. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .

Brake Backing Plate Replacement Rear Axle

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist
  2. Remove axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Replacement .
  3. Remove the brake pipe from the wheel cylinder.
  4. Remove the brake components from the brake backing plate. Refer to Brake Lining Replacement and Wheel Cylinder Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 157327  Size: SH
  6. Remove the bolts and washers from the axle.
  7. Remove the brake backing plate from the axle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 157327  Size: SH
  1. Install the brake backing plate on the axle.
  2. Install the bolts and washer to the brake backing plate.
  3. Install the brake components to the brake backing plate. Refer to Brake Lining Replacement and Wheel Cylinder Replacement .
  4. Install the brake pipe to the wheel cylinder. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes for the bleeding and adjustment procedure.
  5. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Rear Axle Replacement .
  6. Install the wheel, tire, and brake drum.
