Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 1859-A Steering Wheel
Puller
- Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system (if
equipped). Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
in SIR.
- Remove the inflator module. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement
in SIR.
- Remove the horn pad assembly (if not equipped with an SIR). Refer
to
Horn Pad Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Remove the horn switch. Refer to
Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Make an alignment mark in order to note the relationship of the
steering wheel to the steering shaft.
- Remove the steering wheel nut.
- Use the J 1859-A
in order to remove the
steering wheel.
Installation Procedure
- Align the marks made during the removal procedure on the steering
shaft and the steering wheel.
- Install the steering wheel
onto the steering shaft.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the steering
wheel nut to the steering shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
- Install the horn switch. Refer to

- Install the horn pad assembly, if not equipped with an SIR. Refer
to
Horn Pad Replacement - On Vehicle
.
- Install the inflator module. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement
in SIR.
- Enable the SIR system, if equipped. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
