SERVICE REPLACEMENT TRANS.ASSY (SRTA) PROGRAM PROCEDURES

SUBJECT: HYDRA-MATIC 3L80/3L80-HD SERVICE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY (SRTA) PROGRAM

MODELS: 1981-90 C/K, R/V, P TRUCKS AND G VANS WITH 3L80/3L80-HD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

BULLETIN COVERS:

The HYDRA-MATIC 3L80/3L80-HD Service Replacement Transmission Assembly (SRTA) program has begun. At the start of the program, SRTA models can be ordered for all 1981 through 1990 HYDRA-MATIC 3L80/3L80-HD model applications from your local General Motors Service Parts Operation (GMSPO) Parts Distribution Center.

The HYDRA-MATIC 3L80/3L80-HD program is customer satisfaction driven and parallels the existing programs. Unit replacement through SRTA represents an additional method of service which General Motors dealers and Divisions can offer the customer in instances where major overhaul is necessary. Additional program details are provided as follows:

SRTA ADVANTAGES:

- A SRTA is the product of a highly successful, customer satisfaction driven program providing the technician with a service alternative when addressing diagnostic and overhaul concerns.

- All SRTA units are designed and remanufactured to current engineering specifications and are often less costly than a major overhaul.

- GMSPO Parts Distribution Centers are committed to 48 hour maximum delivery time for all SRTA models, with no VIP charges.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, SRTA models should only be considered when the projected cost of repair exceeds the cost of a SRTA replacement.

GENERAL GUIDELINES - REPLACEMENT OR OVERHAUL:

Due to limited availability of all SRTA models, SRTA usage should ONLY be considered for the following condition:

- Repairs in which the projected cost exceeds the cost of the SRTA replacement.

Dealer 3L80/3L80-HD transmission repairs include:

- All on-truck serviceable items.

- All internal repairs which are projected to cost less than a SRTA replacement.

TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER FLUSHING:

[!] IMPORTANT

Transmission fluid cooler and lines flushing MUST be performed whenever a transmission is removed for service. It is essential to flush the cooler and lines prior to transmission installation or major overhaul, if fluid contamination is suspected, or in any case of pump or torque converter replacement. A cooler flushing tool, Kent-Moore number J 35944, has been sent to your dealership to properly flush the cooler. Time allowance to use the cooler flushing tool is 0.6 hours. This allowance is included in operation number K7000 (Transmission Removal and Replacement) for 1987-90 model year Labor Time Guides and can be added to Removal and Replacement allowances for the 1981 through 1986 model years.

SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES (Figure 1)

Each SRTA unit will be shipped in a container which must be used for core return of the original 3L80/3L80-HD assembly to your GMSPO Parts Dis- tribution Center. A SRTA Information Packet is included with each SRTA unit. The contents of this envelope are to be removed and used as described with each illustration on the following pages.

SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES - INFORMATION PACKET (Figure 2)

The contents of this envelope include Limited Warranty Information, Dealer Product Feedback Form, Core Exchange Return Procedure, and a pre-addressed return mailing envelope. A dealer representative is to explain all warranty information contained in this envelope to the customer.

SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES - CORE EXCHANGE RETURN (Figure 3)

The core return procedure provides detailed instructions for the GM dealer on handling of the SRTA and original 3L80/3L80-HD units. This sheet can be discarded after use.

SRTA PROCESSING PROCEDURES - FAILURE ANALYSIS INFORMATION (Figure 4)

This Product Feedback Form is to be completed by the service manager and/or technician. Fill out this form as completely as possible to provide informa- tion which can be used for analysis. This valuable input can result in future product refinement through corrective action. Insert the white copy of the completed form and a copy of the repair order into the SRTA information Packet envelope, reseal the envelope and wire tag it to the bell housing of the unit being returned for core exchange. Return the yellow copy of the completed Product Feedback Form, using the postpaid envelope, to Hydra-matic Division.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
