TRANSFER CASE HOPS OUT OF 4 - LOW

SUBJECT: TRANSFER CASE HOPS OUT OF 4-LOW (REPLACE WITH REVISED DETENT LEVER)

MODELS: 1989-95 CHEVROLET AND GMC TRUCK K3 MODELS WITH BORG-WARNER 1370, 4401 OR 4470 TRANSFER CASE

CONDITION:

SOME VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A CONDITION OF THE TRANSFER CASE HOPPING OUT OF 4-LOW.

CAUSE:

THIS CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY AN INCORRECTLY ADJUSTED TRANSFER CASE SHIFT LINKAGE OR LOW DETENT LOADS AT THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT DETENT LEVER.

CORRECTION:

INSPECT AND ADJUST THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT LINKAGE AS DETAILED IN THE APPROPRIATE C/K SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 7D, TRANSFER CASE LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT. IF, AFTER PROPERLY ADJUSTING THE LINKAGE, THE TRANSFER CASE CONTINUES TO HOP OUT OF 4-LOW, THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT DETENT LEVER (FIGURE 1, #38) SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH A REVISED SHIFT DETENT LEVER. THIS REVISED SHIFT DETENT LEVER HAS A DEEPER 4-LOW DETENT NOTCH TO PREVENT 4-LOW HOP OUT.

THE REVISED SHIFT DETENT LEVER ENTERED PRODUCTION NOVEMBER 1994 FOR 1995 MODEL YEAR BORG-WARNER 4401 AND 4470 TRANSFER CASE ASSEMBLIES. THE REVISED TRANSFER CASE ASSEMBLIES ARE IDENTIFIED BY BORG-WARNER AUTOMOTIVE P/N'S 4401-015, 4401-016 OR 4470-012. SEE FIGURE 2 FOR IDENTIFICATION TAG INFORMATION.

FOR TRANSFER CASE REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE C/K SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 7D, TRANSFER CASE REPLACEMENT. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE LIGHT DUTY TRUCK UNIT REPAIR MANUAL FOR SHIFT DETENT LEVER REPLACEMENT.
