Noise from Clutch Housing, Clutch May Not Engage, Clutch Disc Hub Cracked/Broken (Install Revised Clutch Disc)

Models:

1992-99 Chevrolet and GMC C/K 2-3 Models

with 6.5L Diesel Engine (VIN Code F - RPO L65) and NV4500 5-Speed Manual Transmissions (RPOs MW3, MT8)

This bulletin is being revised to add model years and parts information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-07-31-003 (Section 07 --Transmission/Transaxle).

Condition

Some owners may comment about a noise coming from the clutch housing or a clutch that may not engage or, in rare instances, not release when towing or hauling heavy loads. Also, visual inspection of the clutch may also show cracks or breakage of the hub.

This condition may also occur on 1992-96 6.5L C/K models if these vehicles have a conventional flywheel and clutch package installed per Corporate Bulletin Number 66-72-02B.

Cause

Overtravel of the clutch damper, which could cause cracking and possible fracture of the clutch hub, may cause this condition.

Correction

A revised clutch kit, which includes a pressure plate and an updated clutch disk, has been developed to correct this condition. Install this revised clutch disk on affected vehicles. Use the appropriate part number listed below. Refer to the Clutch subsection in the appropriate C/K Service Manual for clutch replacement procedures.

Important:

•	Align the light side of the pressure plate assembly, identified by a paint dot near a bolt hole, with the heavy side of the flywheel, identified by an "X."

•	Tighten each pressure plate bolt one turn at a time in order to evenly compress the spring and to avoid warping the pressure plate assembly.

Tighten
Tighten the pressure plate bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft).
