  1. Place the transmission in Park (automatic) or depress the clutch (manual).
  2. Connect the voltmeter from the PPL (6) wire at the Starter Solenoid Terminal S to the engine ground.
  3. Place the ignition switch in the Start position and measure the voltage.

Does battery voltage exist?

  1. Remove the starter relay from the relay socket.
  2. Using a test lamp, check for voltage at the starter relay socket cavity A9 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

  1. Disconnect the PPL (6) wire from the starter solenoid terminal S.
  2. Using a self powered test lamp, check for continuity between the starter relay socket cavity B7 to the starter solenoid end of the PPL (6) wire.

Does the test lamp light?

Using a self-powered test lamp, check for the continuity between the starter relay socket cavity A7 to ground.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Place the transmission in Park (Automatic) or depress clutch pedal (manual).
  2. Connect the voltmeter from the starter relay socket cavity B9 to ground.
  3. Place the ignition switch in start and measure the voltage.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Disconnect clutch pedal position switch connector.
  2. Connect the voltmeter from the PPL (806) wire at the clutch pedal position switch connector to ground.
  3. Ensure that the ignition switch is in the Start position.

Does battery voltage exist?

  1. Depress the clutch and put the transmission in Neutral.
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Connect the fused jumper from the PPL (806) to the PPL (1035) at clutch pedal position switch connector.
  4. Place the ignition switch in the start position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Disconnect the transmission range switch connector.
  2. Connect the voltmeter from the PPL (806) wire at the transmission range switch connector to ground.
  3. Place the ignition switch in the Run position.

Does battery voltage exist?

  1. Connect a fused jumper from the transmission range switch connector PPL (806) wire to the PPL (1035) wire.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the Start position.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Connect a voltmeter from the ignition switch YEL (5) wire to ground.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the Run position.

  1. Clean the starter motor mounting bolts, starter motor, and mounting surface.
  2. Repeat the test.

Is the starter motor still bad?

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement for gasoline engines. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement for diesel engines.

Was the replacement successful?

  1. Locate and repair open in the RED (242) wire between fuse 6 and the starter relay.
  2. Install the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

Connect the PPL (6) wire at the starter solenoid terminal S.

Is the PPL (6) wire connected?

  1. Locate and repair open in PPL (6) wire between the starter relay and the starter solenoid.
  2. Install the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Locate and repair open in BLK (150) wire between starter relay and ground G105.
  2. Install the starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the starter relay.

Is the replacement complete?

Install the starter relay in the underhood fuse-relay center.

Does the vehicle have a manual transmission?

  1. Adjust the clutch pedal position switch.
  2. If the start switch cannot be adjusted, replace the clutch pedal position switch.

Is the clutch pedal adjusted or replaced?

Locate and repair open in PPL (1035) wire from clutch pedal position switch connector to starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the transmission range switch.

Locate and repair open in transmission range switch PPL (1035) wire from transmission range switch to starter relay.

Is the repair complete?

Locate and repair open in YEL (5) wire from the ignition switch to the I/P fuse block crank fuse 8.

Locate and repair open in PPL (806) from the I/P fuse block Crank fuse 8 to clutch pedal position switch (manual) or transmission range switch (automatic).

Is the repair complete?

Locate and repair the open in RED (242) wire between the ignition switch and the underhood fuse-relay center.
