For 1990-2009 cars only
  1. Install the head gasket onto the engine block.
  2. Important: Do not use sealer on any engines that use a composition gasket.

  3. Align the gasket locating mark to face up.
  4. Install the cylinder head onto the block. Guide the cylinder head carefully into place over the dowel pins and head gasket.
  5. Coat the threads of the cylinder head bolts with sealing compound GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent.

  6. Object Number: 64549  Size: SH
  7. Install the cylinder head bolts in the following three sequential steps:
  8. Tighten

    1. The first pass to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
    2. The second pass to 80 N·m (60 ft lb).
    3. The third pass to 115 N·m (85 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the spark plugs.
  10. Tighten

        • For a new cylinder head, tighten the spark plugs to 30 N·m (22 ft lb).
        • For subsequent installations, tighten the spark plugs to 20 N·m (15 ft lb).
