Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the air cleaner intake duct.
  3. Remove the grill. Refer to Sheet Metal.
  4. Remove the radiator and the air conditioning condenser as an assembly. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  5. Remove the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  6. Remove the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  7. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  8. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  9. Remove the pushrods and the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Remove the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  11. Remove camshaft retainer bolts and retainer.

  13. Install two or three 5/16-18 bolts 4-5 inches long into the camshaft threaded holes. Use these bolts as a handle for the camshaft removal.
  14. Pull the camshaft from the block. Use care to prevent damage to the camshaft bearings.
  15. Clean, inspect, repair or replace the camshaft and related components. Refer to Camshaft Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install two or three 5/16-18 bolts 4-5 inches long into the camshaft threaded holes. Use these bolts as a handle for the camshaft installation.
  2. Coat the camshaft lobes and the journals with engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent.

  4. Install the camshaft into the engine. Handle the camshaft carefully to prevent damage to the camshaft bearings.
  5. Remove the 5/16-18 bolts from the camshaft.
  6. Install camshaft retainer and retainer bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the camshaft retainer bolts to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  9. Install the valve lifters, the pushrods, and the valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement and Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
  11. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  12. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .
  13. Install the generator and the bracket. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Install the radiator and A/C condenser assembly. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  15. Install the grill.
  16. Install the air cleaner intake duct.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18. Fill the cooling system with the proper quantity and grade of coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  19. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
