This bulletin is being revised to update the affected model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 00-02-32-001 (Section 02 -- Steering).

A new power steering (PS) reservoir and bracket have been released and are available as a service replacement for power steering systems that may become contaminated with metal debris or other materials. This reservoir features an in-line filter and should further improve the operation of the PS system. Refer to the parts information listed below.

Install this new PS reservoir/filter assembly and bracket on any vehicle that may experience a contamination condition. Remove the current reservoir and install the new reservoir in the same location. Also refer to the illustrations for the recommended mounting of the reservoir.

Before installing the new PS reservoir, thoroughly flush the PS system. Refer to the Power Steering System subsection of the appropriate Service Manual for PS system flushing procedures. Also refer to Corporate Service Bulletin Number 99-02-32-006, dated August 1999.

Notice: On T Series Tilt Cab models, equipped with 3116 Caterpillar® diesel engines, two 11 mm (0.44 in) holes will have to be drilled through the existing mounting flange. Do not damage any electrical components mounted to the back side of the flange. Use the mounting bracket for the new reservoir as a template for drilling.

Important:

   • The new reservoir bracket has a universal mounting flange. For both gas and diesel engine installations, only two of the four bracket mounting holes are used and the bracket is bolted to the existing reservoir flange.
   • Always mount the reservoir higher than the PS pump. This assures that the air is purged from the PS system. The reservoir bottom should be mounted higher than the PS pump inlet port.

After installing the reservoir, verify that the hoses are routed properly. The hoses should not contact surrounding components. In some installations, previously used quick connect fittings will have to be discarded and flexible line lengths slightly modified. Use worm clamps to make the connections at the reservoir.

The regularly scheduled maintenance interval for the replacement of the filter element is 166,000 km (100,000 mi) or two years, whichever occurs first.
