Subject:Water Intrusion into Power Steering Reservoir (Replace Power Steering Reservoir Cap)

Models:1997-99 Chevrolet and GMC F Model T-Series Medium Duty Models
with Gas or Diesel Engines and Power Steering (RPOs LRO, LSO, LXO, LG5, N40)

This bulletin is being revised to correct the power steering reservoir cap part number. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-02-32-004 (Section 02--Steering).

Condition

Some owners/operators of the above vehicles may comment about water entering the power steering (PS) reservoir and contaminating the PS fluid.

Cause

This condition may be caused by water entering the vent hole on the top of the reservoir cap. This reservoir is installed behind the cab on the T-Series truck. The location of the PS reservoir may expose the reservoir to the elements.

Correction

A new PS reservoir cap has been developed to correct this condition. The vent hole is now located under the cap shell instead of on top of the cap. Replace the PS reservoir cap on affected vehicles. Use the following procedure and the part number listed below.

  1. Remove the PS reservoir cap. Discard the cap.
  2. Inspect the PS fluid. If contamination is evident (fluid will have a milky-like or foamy appearance), flush the power steering system thoroughly. Refer to the Flushing the Power Steering System procedure in the appropriate Medium Duty Service Manual.
  3. Refill the PS system with new fluid. The fill capacity can be up to 3.9 qts (3.7 L).
  4. Install the new PS reservoir cap.
