Condition

Some customers may comment on high transmission shift effort while driving.

Correction

Replace the gearshift control (change lever) assembly and shift cable using the following procedure. The gearshift control (change lever) assembly is not serviced as an assembly. Individual parts must be obtained and assembled. Assemble a new gearshift control (change lever) using the parts listed below. Use the old gearshift control (change lever) assembly as an aid to assemble parts.

    Important: Apply the parking brake and block all of the wheels on the vehicle prior to starting this procedure.


    Object Number: 203426 Size: SH
  1. Place the transmission in the neutral position.
  2. Remove the shift control knob from the shift control lever.

    3. Object Number: 203427 Size: SH
  3. Remove the four screws securing the shift boot to the gearshift control (change lever) bracket.

    4. Object Number: 203428 Size: SH
  4. Remove the two nuts, the washers, and the clips securing the shift and select cables to the gearshift control (change lever) assembly.
  5. Remove the two nuts and washers securing the gearshift control (change lever) assembly to the panel.
  6. Remove the shift cable from the panel.

    7. Object Number: 204762 Size: SH
  7. Remove the nut, the washer, and the clip securing the shift cable to the transmission control lever.

    8. Object Number: 206550 Size: SH
  8. Remove the bolts and nuts securing the shift cable to the rear frame rail bracket.

    9. Object Number: 206549 Size: SH
  9. Remove the bolts and nuts securing the shift cable to the front frame rail brackets. Note the routing of the shift cable.
  10. Install the bolts and nuts securing the new shift cable to the frame rail brackets.

    11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and nuts to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  11. Install the nut, the washer, and the clip securing the new shift cable to the transmission control lever.

    12. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  12. Install the new shift cable through the panel.
  13. Install the two nuts and washers securing the new gearshift control (change lever) assembly to the panel.

    14. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 22 N·m (16 lb ft).

  14. Install the two nuts, the washers, and the clips securing the shift and select cables to the gearshift control (change lever) assembly.

    15. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  15. Install the four screws securing the shift boot to the new gearshift control (change lever) bracket.
  16. Install the shift control knob to the shift control lever.
  17. Adjust the shift cable using the procedure and table listed below.

Shift Cable Adjustment
  1. Remove the nut and washer securing the shift control cable from the transmission control lever.
  2. Ensure that the transmission shift lever is in the mechanical neutral position.
  3. Turn the adjustment nut at the end of the shift cable in order to obtain the proper rear side of bracket to control lever distance. See the table below.
  4. Install the nut and washer securing the shift cable to the transmission control lever.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  5. Start the engine and verify proper shift operation.
