The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Eaton Corporation has advised that some RT8908LL Model 10 speed manual transmissions RPO MT3 may have been manufactured with the input shaft wear sleeve missing. If left unchecked the transmission will develop a severe oil leak at the input shaft seal location leading to a low lubrication failure.

2007 C75/85 and T75/85 Models built from July 19, 2006 through September 11, 2006 with RPO MT3 should be inspected to determine if the input shaft wear sleeve GM #12472014 (Eaton P/N 16979) is present using the following inspection procedure.

Recommendation/Instructions:

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

  1. Remove the clutch housing inspection cover.
  2. Inspect front bearing cover to verify the wear sleeve is in place (see Figures 1 & 2 below).
  3. If the wear sleeve is present as shown in Figure 1, the inspection procedure is complete.
  4. Replace the clutch housing inspection cover.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

If the wear sleeve is missing as shown in Figure 2, the transmission must be removed from the vehicle per SI Document ID #1524110 to perform the following repair procedure.

  1. If oil was leaking, clean the affected area first and then remove the front bearing cover.
  2. Remove the input shaft snap ring, input bearing, main drive gear snap ring and the input shaft.
  3. Obtain a new input shaft GM #12472015 (Eaton P/N 19721) and install the new wear sleeve GM #12472014 using the following procedure:
  4. • Heat the wear sleeve on a bearing induction heater or a hot plate (do not overheat - 150 degrees F is adequate).
    •  Apply a light film of Loctite #641 Sealant to the new input shaft, install wear sleeve on input shaft and seat firmly against the stop.

Note: Use caution when installing the wear sleeve to avoid misalignment to the input shaft.

  5. Install input shaft, bearing and snap rings into the transmission.
  6. Inspect front bearing cover input shaft seal GM #12470895 (Eaton P/N 16976) for damage and replace as necessary.
  7. Replace front bearing cover gasket GM #2464166 (Eaton P/N 14311) and install the front cover.
  8. Verify that the wear sleeve is contacting the input shaft seal as shown in Figure 1.
  9. Degrease the clutch if necessary and install the transmission.
  10. Check transmission for proper lubrication level.
