INFORMATION ON AVOIDING DISTRESSED WIRE CONNECTORS

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON AVOIDING DISTRESSED WIRE CONNECTORS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1991-92 C/K, R/V, P TRUCKS AND G VAN WITH 4L80-E/4L80-EHD

Some high-mileage 1991-92 HYDRA-MATIC 4L80-E transmission wiring harness electrical connectors may crack or break when removing the valve body assembly rendering the connectors inoperable. For proper transmission identification see Figure 1.

This could be the result of the electrical connectors being pryed off of their connection point with a screwdriver or other similar tool when removal of the control valve body is required for servicing of a unit. A distressed connector requires the replacement of the entire wiring harness assembly. For connector location see Figure 2.

When removing the valve body assembly, to prevent connector distress, do not pry them off their connections. instead, disconnect the main electrical connector from the transmission case and remove the entire wiring harness assembly with the valve body. Avoid removing the electrical connectors unless the procedure is absolutely necessary (i.e., replacement of the wiring harness).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
