USE OF TEFLON SEALANT TAPE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1982-1984 C,K,G,S,T, With Automatic Transmission

The use of Teflon (R) pipe sealant tape is not recommended for sealing transmission pressure test plugs or cooler line fittings. The residual tape that remains after a plug or fitting has been removed is forced inward when the plug or fitting is reinstalled. This fibrous material is then transferred by transmission oil into the system where it can bind valves and block exhaust ports.

The recommended sealer for this application is GM pipe sealant, P/N 992545, or an equivalent such as LocTite pipe sealant with Teflon.

When installing pressure test plugs, care must be exercised in not exceeding the recommended torque limits, as cracked ports may result.
