In order to eliminate the need for a calibrated cable tension gauge, the procedure for parking brake adjust ent listed in Section 5 of the S Truck Service Manual has been revised.
The parking brake system must be readjusted whenever the parking brake cables have been disconnected, a cable has been replaced, or if the brake holding ability is not adequate. Before adjusting the parking brake, check the service brake condition. The service brakes must be properly adjusted as a base for the parking brake adjustment.
. Block front wheels, lift and support rear axle.
. Set parking brake pedal at specified number of clicks: 2 wheel drive pickups and Jimmy/Blazer - 2 clicks. 4 wheel drive pickups and Jimmy/Blazer - 3 clicks.
. Loosen the equalizer until rear wheels spin freely, Figure 1. Some pickup trucks will have an intermediate cable guide bracket. This must be removed before making any parking brake cable adjustments.
. Tighten the equalizer nut until the rear wheels will not rotate without excessive force in a forward direction.
. Back off on the equalizer nut until there is moderate drag when the rear wheels are rotated in a forward direction. Reinstall the cable guide bracket if removed.
. Release parking brake and rotate the rear wheels. There should be no brake drag.
. Remove supports and lower vehicle.
