SERPENTINE BELT CHIRP 1988 S/T TRUCKS

MODEL: 1988 S/T TRUCK WITH 4.3L ENGINE (VIN CODE Z)

Some owners of 1988 4.3L S/T trucks may ex- perience a chirping noise from the accessory drive belt. "Belt Chirp" is a short duration, intermittent, high pitched sound and should not be confused with belt "squeal", which is continuous in nature.

This condition can be addressed by aligning the power steering pump pulley 3/4mm plus or minus 1/4mm (.030" plus or minus .010") forward of flush with the power steering pump shaft (See Figure No. 1). A wheel puller should be used to perform this realignment.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
