SPECIAL POLICY: ADJUSTMENT 76 LITRE FUEL TANK INFORMATION

SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT - LACK OF SPECIFIED 76 LITER FUEL TANK

VEHICLES AFFECTED: EARLY 1988 S 10/15 PICKUP TRUCKS (EXCEPT X81 AND X9H)

General Motors of Canada has determined that instead of the specified 76 liter fuel tank, a 50 liter fuel tank was installed in certain 1988 S 10/15 pickup and chassis cab model trucks (except options X81 and X9H) built at the Moraine assembly plant. The price label on an affected vehicle states that the unit has a 76 liter tank (the price of the 76 liter tank is included in the base vehicle price) but the absence of NK2 from this service information label indicates that it has a 50 liter fuel tank. Dealers were notified of this matter on February 17, 1988.

SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT

Original owners of record who purchased their vehicles on or before February 17, 1988, will be contacted and offered a choice of the following:

A. $100.00 total reimbursement adjustment incentive. OR B. Installation of a 76 liter fuel tank at no charge.

When the original purchaser requests reimbursement, that customer MUST sign and date the Option Selection form included as part of the owner letter (extra copies to be reproduced locally, if needed). The signed form and a copy of the cheque issued to the owner is to be attached to the dealer's file copy of the request within thirty (30) days after dealer credit is received and retained for twenty-four (24) months from the date of credit.

For vehicles in dealer inventory after February 17, 1988 and not sold, dealers were requested to disclose this condition to the prospective purchaser and to make an appropriate price adjustment in the amount of $64.00 MSRP from the MSRP for the base vehicle. This is General Motors of Canada's calculation of the portion of the vehicle's MSRP attributable to the larger fuel tank ($56.19 dealer price) . The dealer should claim an Invoice Adjustment Amount of $56.19 for all the vehicles denoted as 'NOT REPORTED SOLD' on his VIN and Owner Name and Address Listing.

This special Policy Adjustment will remain in effect until MAY 15, 1989 with no kilometer restriction.

This Special Policy Adjustment Bulletin should be filed in the three-ring binder furnished to the dealer by General Motors.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1988 S 10/15 pickup and chassis cab model trucks (except options X81 and X9H) built within the following VIN breakpoints which were sold to retail purchasers on or before February 17, 1988.

Original owners of record on or before February 17, 1988 will be notified of this Special Policy Adjustment by General Motors of Canada (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin).

When required, parts are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTICE: Intank electric fuel pump will be reused; do not discard intank fuel pump.

1. Drain fuel tank. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.

CAUTION:

To help avoid a fire or explosion, never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container.

Use a hand operated pump device to drain as much fuel as possible through the filter neck. On some fuel tank installations, the filler neck is too long to gain access to the fuel. If the tank is not full, disconnect filler neck hose, at the fuel tank, to gain access to the fuel.

Alternate method:

a. Disconnect fuel feed pipe and attach a hand operated pump device.

b. Energize the fuel pump relay.

c. With fuel pump running, operate hand pump to remove fuel.

2. Relieve full system pressure (2.5L Engine only).

3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

4. Remove fuel tank and tank shield if so equipped.

5. Remove sender unit and pump by turning the cam lock counterclockwise using tool J-36608 or J-24187 to remove fuel pump from the sending unit.

- Pull the fuel pump up into the attaching hose while pulling outward from the bottom support.

- Do not damage the rubber insulator or the strainer.

6. Install fuel pump on new sender. Install sender into new fuel tank. The new sender seal must also be used.

7. Install fuel tank. Torque bolts: - Front Bolt to 5- 8 Nm (4-6 ft/lb) - Rear Bolt to 30-4O Nm (19-30 ft/lb)

8. Install front tank shield and torque nuts to 14-18 Nm (11-14 ft/lb) .

9. Lower truck.

10. Refill fuel tank.

Records indicate that you purchased one of those vehicles before dealers could be requested to disclose this condition to a prospective purchaser and to offer a price adjustment to compensate for it.

SPECIAL POLICY ADJUSTMENT

General Motors of Canada is offering owners of record, who purchased their vehicles on or before February 17, 1988 a choice of the following:

A. $100.00 total reimbursement adjustment incentive. OR B. Installation of a 76 liter fuel tank at no charge.

This Special Policy Adjustment will remain in effect until MAY 15, 1989 with no mileage restriction.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Contact your General Motors dealer to request reimbursement or make arrangements to have a 76 liter fuel tank installed in your vehicle at no charge to you. Please complete and sign the Option Selection Form below and present it to your General Motors dealer as notification of your choice.
