The exhaust system design will vary according to the model and the intended use of the vehicle.

The exhaust system uses a flange and a seal joint coupling to secure the exhaust pipe to the engine manifold. Most other connections use a slip joint coupling design with a clamp and a U-bolt.

The exhaust system is suspended by hangers that are attached to the frame members. The hangers allow some movement of the exhaust system.

Heat shields protect the vehicle and the environment from the high temperatures the exhaust system develops.

The three-way catalytic converter is an emission control device that reduces hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide pollutants. The converter contains beads which are coated with a catalytic material of platinum, and rhodium. These reduce the level of nitrogen oxides. The catalyst in the three-way converter is not serviceable. Reinstall the correct three-way catalytic converter to avoid engine driveability problems.

Notice: Replacement of exhaust system parts must be OEM standard to ensure that the vehicle operates as designed.

Exhaust system performance complaints, such as excessive back pressure, have a noticeable effect on engine performance. However, other malfunctioning vehicle components have similar effects. Therefore it is necessary to refer to the diagnosis procedure when trying to identify and correct this type of problem.
