Perform a hot re-strike.

Did the hot re-strike fail?

  1. Disconnect the inoperative headlamp ballast connector.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the appropriate locations:
  3. • For the left headlamp, between CKT 712 (YEL) and ground
    • For the right headlamp, between CKT 312 (TAN/WHT) and ground
  4. Move the headlamp switch to the HEAD position.

Does the test lamp light?

Go to Step 9

Inspect the underhood fuse block connector C4 for damaged or corroded terminals.

Are the terminals damaged or corroded?

--

Go to Step 5

Clean or repair the terminals as necessary.

Is the repair complete?

Inspect the following circuits for opens:

    • For the left headlamp, CKT 712 (YEL)
    • For the right headlamp, CKT 312 (TAN/WHT)

Are the circuits OK?

Go to Step 8

Repair the open in the appropriate circuit:

    • For the left headlamp, CKT 712 (YEL)
    • For the right headlamp, CKT 312 (TAN/WHT)

Is the repair complete?

Replace the underhood fuse block.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Connect the test leads and the test adapters to a J 39200 digital multimeter (DMM).
  2. Connect the leads of the J 39200 DMM together.
  3. Set the J 39200 DMM to the Ohms scale.
  4. Record this value. Subtract this value from all resistance readings. If the meter you are using has zeroing function, zero the meter.
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6. Connect the J 39200 DMM to the appropriate locations:
  7. • For the left headlamp, between CKT 150 (BLK) and ground
    • For the right headlamp, between CKT 250 (BLK) and ground

Is the resistance less than the specified value?

1 ohms

Go to Step 11

Locate and repair the high resistance in the appropriate circuit:

    • For the left headlamp, CKT 150 (BLK)
    • For the right headlamp, CKT 250 (BLK)

Is the repair complete?

  1. Replace the LT LOW fuse or the RT LOW fuse in the underhood fuse block with a 10A fuse.
  2. Connect a fused jumper with at least a 25A fuse between the following components:
  3. • For the left headlamp, between CKT 712 (YEL) and CKT 150 (BLK)
    • For the right headlamp, CKT 312 (TAN/WHT) and CKT 250 (BLK)

Does the 10A fuse in the underhood fuse block for this low beam circuit open within 5 seconds?

  1. Disconnect the jumper wire immediately.
  2. Locate and repair the high resistance in the appropriate circuit:
  3. • For the left headlamp, CKT 712 (YEL)
    • For the right headlamp, CKT 312 (TAN/WHT)

Is the repair complete?

Replace the starter/arc tube assembly for the inoperative headlamp. Refer to High Intensity Discharge Headlamp Starter/Arc Tube Replacement .

Validate the repair by performing a hot re-strike.

Does the HID illuminate and remain lit with a hot re-strike?

Ensure that you did not damage the starter/arc tube assembly during installation.

Is the starter/arc assembly damaged?

Replace the ballast.
