Some 1983-87 S/T trucks may experience a windshield washer spray pattern that is too low on the windshield. This condition usually occurs when the vehicle is being driven at highway speeds.
To repair this condition, a new cowl vent grille screen (Hgure No. 1), P/N 15602771, has been released. This screen has a 1/4 inch vertical tab on its rear edge that raises the rear edge of the cowl grille panel. The windshield washer nozzle, which is part of this grille panel, will subsequently spray the windshield 3 to 6 inches higher than a vehicle equipped with the original screen.
The following procedure should be used when performing this operation.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
o Remove windshield wiper arms. o Raise hood. o With masking tape, tape the lower edges of the grille panel, the hood flange at the grille panel, and the fenders at the grille panel. This is to ensure there is no paint damage to the surrounding sheet metal when the grille panel is removed. o Remove the grille panel fasteners. o Disconnect the windshield washer hose at the nozzel. o Carefully remove the grille panel from the vehicle. o Remove and discard cowl vent grille screen. o Install new screen. o Reinstall grille panel and reconnect washer hose. o Tighten grille panel bolts as specified in Figure No. 1. o Reinstall wiper arms and remove masking tape.
Labor Op A9100 should be used when performing this operation. Repair time is 0.4 hours.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
