Light Duty (15-35) Truck Vehicle Identification Number
"C", "K", "G", "S" and Caballero trucks display the VIN plate on the left hand side of the instrument panel areas. On P 42 models, the plate is attached to the top of the radiator support, and on Motor Home Chassis P 32, to the dash and toe panel.
Medium Duty Truck Vehicle Identificaiton Number
On Conventional Cabs, the VIN plate is mounted on the left door lock pillar. On School Bus chassis, the plate is attached to the engine side of the cowl. On "P" models, it is located on top of the radiator support panel.
Body Identification Plate
On the GMC Caballero, the body identification plate is located on the upper horizontal surface of the cowl plenum chamber.
Light Duty Truck Service Parts Identification Sticker
A Service Parts Identification Sticker is furnished for I.D. trucks except Caballero. It contains a complete listing of the vehicle identificaiton number (VIN) wheel base and all production options used to assemble the vehicle, such as suspension, body equipment, engine, axle, transmission, tires, etc.
On "C-K" and "S" models, this sticker is attached to the inner glove compartment. For "P" models, it is mailed separately to the dealer. On "G" models, the sticker is located on the inner hood panel surface.
Truck Engine Production Code Explanation
Chevrolet produced engines, except 6.2L diesel will be stamped with a source, production date and engine suffix. Other General Motors produced engines used in GMC vehicles will use a label affixed to the engine assembly.

NOTICE: In addition, all 15-35 Series Trucks have a portion of the vehicle identificaiton number stamped near the engine production code, usually near the right hand side of the cylinder case. This identificaiton number consists of the division code, model year, assembly plant designation and vehicle build sequence number.

The truck engine codes are located as follows:
L4 2.0L 112 CID Rear Wheel Drive
The engine suffix and build date is steel stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the left rear side of the cylinder case under the exhaust manifold.
L5 250 CID
The engine suffix and build date is steel stamped on a horizontal machined surface on the right side of the cylinder case adjacent to the distributor shaft.
V8
305, 350 CID Engines - the code is stamped ont he cylinder case pad immediately forward of the right hand cylinder head.
366, 427, 454 CID Engines - the code is stamped on a pad on the front top center of the cylinder case immediately forward of the inlet manifold.
V8 Diesel

Muncie Manual Transmission Production Code Explanation
The production code number contains the source code, model year and build date.

3 Speed (Saginaw Type)
The code is stamped on the left side of the cam just below the side cover.
Muncie Truck 4 Speed
Stamped on the rear face of the transmission case just below the rear retainer.
New Process 205.207 and 209 Model 4-Wheel Drive Transfer Case
The build date showing the month, day and year along with the Chevrolet part number is on a metal tag attached to the front face of the transfer case at PTO cover.
Warner Gear Four and Five Speed Manual Transmissions
The manual transmission code, part number and serial number, appears on a metal tag attached to an extension housing bolt on the left side (8 o'clock position).

Truck Four-Speed Isuzu Transmission (77.5mm)
Right side of bell housing at 3:00 o'clock position five digit ink stamp transmission serial number. Below serial number is five digit date stamp. 4 - Last Digit of Year 04 - Month 01 - Date
THM 700-R4 Automatic Transmission
The identification number is stamped into right rear oil pan rail. The format includes the year, model, Julian build date and shift.

350C transmissions produced by Chevrolet Parma have a production code stamped on the governor cover.

400-475 Model Turbo Hydra-matic Transmission
The transmission model number and sequance number is stamped on the identification plate located at the right rear extension.

TRUCK TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION NUMBER FOR "SERVICE" USAGE
The following system will be used to identify service transmission assemblies domestically produced. This number system applies to complete service transmission assemblies only. Transmission cases are no longer identified. Manufacturing plants will number each service assembly as it is produced. The first letter will designate the GM division which produced the unit. "C" (Chevrolet).
The second letter will indicate the type of unit. "T" (transmission). The number following the letter will designate the model year. "4" (1984). The last five digits specify the service replacement sequence number. The group o numbers to be used by Chevrolet Manufacturing plants are as follows:
PLANT SERIAL SEOUENCE
Chevrolet - Parma transmission Plant 00001 to 14999 Chevrolet - Muncie Transmission Plant 25000 to 99999 Hydra-Matic 00001 to 99999
Hydra-Matic transmissions will be numbered with the letter "H" regardless of the GM division using the transmission.
EXAMPLE: Number CT400175 designates Chevrolet transmission, year and 175th unit produced for service at Parma.
Upon completion of the serial sequence, the plant will re-use the above numbers using a letter prefix, such as A, B or C tp indicate late production transmission; for example:CT2A0001.

Code is stamped on rear surface of right axle tube.
The Chevrolet produced axles use a prefix code stamped into the axle tube for axle code identification. Dana produced axles use the same prefix code as the Chevrolet axles, but they display these codes on a strip of tape attached to the outboard end of the axle tube.
