PAINT PEELING ON TRUCKS BUILT AT SHREVEPORT PLANT

MODELS: 1988-1989 S/T SHREVEPORT BUILT VEHICLES (VIN CODE 8, 11th DIGIT of VIN)

Some Shreveport Built 1988-1989 S/T pickups and S/T Jimmys that were manufactured with Galaxy Blue (paint code 28), Aspen Blue (paint code 24), or Steel Grey (paint code 90) exterior paint may experience a paint peeling condition. In the event that one of these vehicles requires repairs for a paint peeling condition, it is recommended that the truck be repainted as described below even though peeling may be evident in only a few places.

The front bumper filler panel and all surfaces above the beltline (see figure 1.) must be refinished according to the procedure listed below. If vertical surfaces below the belt line and the interior of the pickup box (on pickup models) appear to be in good condition, the dealer should scuff sand, seal and color coat those painted surfaces rather than refinish. However, if any peeling or topcoat delamination is evident, or if scuff sanding produces any topcoat delamination, it will be neces- sary to refinish these surfaces as well, according to the rocedures below.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

Standard refinish techniques should be used. The color coat should be removed, but the primer should be left intact.

LABOR OPERATION INFORMATION:

When submitting for warranty payment for repairs to vehicles covered by this builetin, use the following labor operations and times to refinish entire vehicle above the belt line and color coat below the belt line, including inside of pickup box.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
