CAMPAIGN:REAR WIPER SCRATCHES ENDGATE

SUBJECT: REAR WIPER SCRATCHES ENDGATE

MODELS: 1995 GMC JIMMY WITH REAR WIPER (RPO C25)

General Motors has determined that on CERTAIN 1995 GMC Jimmys equipped with a rear window wiper, the rear wiper blade can pivot as a result of the vehicle going through certain car washes. This can cause paint mutilation to the endgate. In these car washes, the cleaning action can pull the blade assembly out of its parked position and the inboard end of the blade can pivot 90 degrees towards the endgate. In this position, any movement of the wiper blade can scratch the paint and possibly gouge the metal on the endgate.

To correct this condition, dealers will replace the existing wiper blade with one that has an anti-pivot pin and repair any resultant paint damage to the endgate.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are CERTAIN 1995 S/T utilities with rear wipers built within the following VIN breakpoints:

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

All unsold vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign MUST be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin BEFORE owners take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to make the required correction according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

If the name and address of the owner of an involved vehicle was unavailable to GMC Truck Division at the time of campaign initiation, the dealer must determine the owner's name and address from the dealership sales records. Please provide this information directly on the second copy of the listing next to the applicable VIN so that our records may be updated and the appropriate notification mailed to the owner. This second copy should then be submitted to the address listed below in the previously supplied yellow campaign envelopes.

Owners will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by GMC Truck Division (see copy of owner letter included with this bulletin). A listing of owner names and addresses has been furnished to the involved dealers to enable dealers to follow up with owners involved in this campaign. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to this campaign.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Wiper Blade Replacement Only

1. Remove the black plastic tie band (if equipped).

2. Push the blade assembly locking tab (Figure 1, Item 1) toward the wiper arm and slide the assembly off the wiper arm hook.

3. Install the redesigned wiper blade assembly making certain it engages (clicks) onto the wiper arm. This new assembly contains an anti-rotation pin which prevents over-rotation of the blade.

4. Install the Campaign Identification Label.

IMPORTANT: Inform the customer that aftermarket rear wiper assemblies may NOT have the anti-rotation pin. Installation of such a part could damage the end gate paint if run through a brush-type car wash. However, aftermarket rubber blade inserts can still be used with the new blade assembly.

Endgate Paint Repair, Endgate Protector Installation, and Wiper Blade Replacement ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. If endgate paint shows scratches caused by rear wiper blade flipping over, repaint complete tailgate (refer to section 2B "Paint" of the Service Manual).

2. Paint should be properly dried, and vehicle should be maintained between 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 90 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.

3. The body surface must be clean and devoid of surface contaminants. Wipe the intended endgate protector application area with a 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water.

4. Wipe the application area dry.

5. A wet application method of the protector is recommended. Spray the intended area of application with the 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water.

6. Also spray the adhesive surface of the endgate protector with this solution.

IMPORTANT: To avoid contamination of the adhesive or marring of the protector, touch the pre-mask only.

7. Apply the endgate protector to the endgate, using the cross car locator feature, and the up-down locator feature (Figure 2).

8. Press the adhesive film in place, forcing out the entrapped air and excess wetting solution.

9. Remove entrapped air bubbles by piercing the bubble at the outer edge with a pin and pushing the air toward the hole.

10. Once the endgate protector is applied, remove the pre-mask.

11. Remove the black plastic tie band (if equipped).

12. Push the blade assembly locking tab (Figure 1, Item 1) toward the wiper arm and slide the assembly off the wiper arm hook.

13. Install the redesigned wiper blade assembly making certain it engages (clicks) onto the wiper arm. This new assembly contains an anti-rotation pin which prevents over-rotation of the blade.

Throughout a production run, enhancements typically are made to our vehicles as part of our continuous improvement process. This letter outlines one of these enhancements which GMC Truck would like to make available to you at no charge.

A redesigned wiper blade for the rear window reduces the possibility that the wiper blade may become entangled in certain types of automated car wash equipment.

Instructions for performing this service has been sent to your GMC Truck dealer. This enhancement will be made to your vehicle at no charge to you. Please contact your GMC Truck dealer to arrange a convenient appointment and ensure the proper parts are available to complete this service. The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in installing this enhancement to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
