Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 21366 Converter holding tool

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the filler tube from the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  3. Plug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
  4. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  5. Remove the shift cable from the transmission. Refer Shift Cable Replacement .
  6. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  7. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement .
  8. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement or Transfer Case Replacement or Transfer Case Replacement .
  9. Remove the oil cooler lines. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  10. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  11. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.

  13. Remove the bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission.
  14. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .

  15. Object Number: 647997  Size: SH
  16. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  17. Remove the transmission mount to the transmission support retaining nut or nuts.

  18. Object Number: 702771  Size: SH
  19. Raise the transmission to take the weight off of the mount.
  20. Remove the transmission mount to the transmission or transfer case adapter mounting bolts (1).
  21. Raise the transmission just enough to remove the transmission mount.
  22. Remove the transmission mount from the vehicle.

  24. Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
  25. Slide the transmission back just enough to install J 21366 .
  26. Install J 21366 to the converter housing to secure the torque converter.
  27. Important: J 21366 prevents the torque converter from pulling forward and dropping out of the transmission during engine and transmission separation.

  28. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
  29. Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
  30. Remove J 21366 from the transmission.
  31. Flush the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 32774  Size: SH
  1. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  2. Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366 .
  3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
  4. Ensure the torque converter is seated properly.
  5. Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  7. Secure the torque converter to the flywheel. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .

  9. Secure the converter cover to the transmission with the bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  11. Install the transmission mount to the vehicle.
  12. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  13. Install the transmission mount to the transmission or transfer case adapter mounting bolts (1).
  14. Tighten

        • For vehicles equipped with 2.2L, tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).
        • For vehicles equipped with 4.3L, tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  15. Lower the transmission.
  16. Install the transmission mount to the transmission support retaining nut or nuts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the nut or nuts to 57 N·m (42 lb ft).

  18. Remove the transmission jack.
  19. Connect the wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
  20. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  21. Install the oil cooler lines. Refer to Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement .
  22. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement or Transfer Case Replacement or Transfer Case Replacement .
  23. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
  24. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement or to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  25. Install the shift cable to the transmission. Refer Shift Cable Replacement
  26. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  27. Unplug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
  28. Install the filler tube to the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  29. Fill the transmission to the proper level with transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Capacity .
  30. Lower the vehicle.
  31. Test the transmission for proper operation.
