Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 21366 Converter holding
tool
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the filler tube from the transmission. Refer to
Filler Tube Replacement
.
- Plug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to
General Exhaust System Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove the shift cable from the transmission. Refer
Shift Cable Replacement
.
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
or to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Propeller Shaft.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller
shaft. Refer to
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the transfer
case. Refer to
Transfer Case Replacement
or
Transfer Case Replacement

Transfer Case Replacement

- Remove the oil cooler lines. Refer to
Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
.
- Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission
case.
- Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transmission speed sensor
and park neutral position switch.
- Remove
the bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission.
- Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to
Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement
.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission mount to the transmission support retaining nut
or nuts.
- Raise the transmission to take the weight off of the mount.
- Remove the transmission mount to the transmission or transfer case adapter
mounting bolts (1).
- Raise the transmission just enough to remove the transmission mount.
- Remove the transmission mount from the vehicle.
- Remove the bolts securing the
transmission to the engine.
- Slide the transmission back just enough to install J 21366
.
- Install J 21366
to
the converter housing to secure the torque converter.
Important: J 21366 prevents the torque converter from pulling forward and dropping
out of the transmission during engine and transmission separation.
- Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
- Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
- Remove J 21366
from
the transmission.
- Flush the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to
Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing
.
Installation Procedure
- Support the transmission with
a transmission jack.
- Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366
.
- Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up
the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
- Ensure the torque converter is seated properly.
- Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
Tighten
Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 N·m
(35 lb ft).
- Secure the torque converter to the flywheel. Refer to
Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement
.
- Secure
the converter cover to the transmission with the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the transmission mount to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the transmission mount to the transmission or transfer case adapter
mounting bolts (1).
Tighten
• | For vehicles equipped with 2.2L, tighten the bolts to 45 N·m
(33 lb ft). |
• | For vehicles equipped with 4.3L, tighten the bolts to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft). |
- Lower the transmission.
- Install the transmission mount to the transmission support retaining nut
or nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the nut or nuts to 57 N·m (42 lb ft).
- Remove the transmission jack.
- Connect the wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor
and park neutral position switch.
- Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission
case.
- Install the oil cooler lines. Refer to
Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
.
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer
case. Refer to
Transfer Case Replacement

Transfer Case Replacement

- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller
shaft. Refer to
Front Propeller Shaft Replacement
- Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to
One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
or to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
in Propeller Shaft.
- Install the shift cable to the transmission. Refer
Shift Cable Replacement
- Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to
General Exhaust System Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- Unplug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
- Install the filler tube to the transmission. Refer to
Filler Tube Replacement
.
- Fill the transmission to the proper level with transmission oil. Refer
to
Fluid Capacity
.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Test the transmission for proper operation.
