For 1990-2009 cars only

Important: Never swap OnStar® vehicle integration units (VIU), or the vehicle communication units (VCU) from other vehicles. Transfer of OnStar® components from other vehicles should NOT be done. Each OnStar® component has a unique identification number. The VIU has a 10-digit specific station identification (STID) and the VCU has a 11-digit specific electronic serial number (ESN). These identification numbers are used by the National Cellular Telephone Network and OnStar® systems, and are stored in the General Motors vehicle history files by VIN.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the top cover of the body side trim panel on the right side of the vehicle to expose the VCU/VIU assembly.

  2. Object Number: 655277  Size: SH
  3. Remove the 2 nuts (1) and lift the VCU/VIU assembly up and out of the vehicle.

  4. Object Number: 655250  Size: SH
  5. Disconnect the cellular antenna coaxial cable (2) and electrical connector (6) from the VCU (7).
  6. Disconnect the global position sensor (GPS) cable connector (4) and electrical connector (3) from the VCU/VIU assembly
  7. Remove the 4 screws that attach the VIU to the assembly bracket.
  8. Remove the VIU (1) from the vehicle.
  9. The old VIU must be returned for core credit.

Installation Procedure

  1. Record the 10-digit STID number from the label on the VIU module.
  2. Install the VIU (4) to the VCU/VIU assembly mounting bracket.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the 4 screws that attach the VIU to the assembly bracket.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 2 N·m (18 lb in).

  6. Reconnect the cellular antenna coaxial cable (2) and electrical connector (6) to the VCU.
  7. Reconnect the GPS cable connector (4) and the electrical connector (3) to the VCU/VIU assembly.

  8. Object Number: 655277  Size: SH
  9. Install the VCU/VIU assembly to the vehicle. Ensure that the lower arm (3) of the mounting bracket is inserted into the slot (2) provided in the body sheet metal.
  10. Install the VCU/VIU assembly to the vehicle using the 2 nuts (1).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  12. Install the top cover of the body side trim panel to cover the VCU/VIU assembly.
  13. Reconfigure the OnStar® system. Refer to OnStar Reconfiguration .
  14. The 10-digit STID number recorded will be needed by the OnStar® Dealer Support line.
