Did you perform the Lighting Systems Diagnostic System Check?

Verify that the low beam headlamps are inoperative.

Do the headlamps operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

  1. Move the headlamp switch to the HEAD position.
  2. Move the headlamp dimmer switch to the LOW BEAM position.
  3. Backprobe the headlamp dimmer switch low beam signal circuit at connector C211 using a test lamp from ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 5

Repair the open or high resistance in the headlamp dimmer switch low beam signal circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 6

Replace the multifunction switch. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard or Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 6

Caution: The high intensity discharge system produces high voltage and current. To reduce the risk of severe shocks and burns:

   • Never open the high intensity discharge system ballast or the arc tube assembly starter.
   • Never probe between the high intensity discharge system ballast output connector and the arc tube assembly.

Verify that the low beam headlamps are inoperative.

Do the headlamps operate normally?

Is only one low beam headlamp inoperative?

Go to Step 5

Do the high beam headlamps remain on when the multifunction headlamp dimmer switch is placed in the low beam position?

Go to Step 12

  1. Disconnect the forward lamps harness connector from the inoperative headlamp ballast.
  2. Move the headlamp switch to the HEAD position.
  3. Move the multifunction headlamp dimmer switch to the LOW BEAM position.
  4. Connect a test lamp from the headlamp ballast forward lamps harness connector terminal A to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Connect a test lamp between the headlamp ballast forward lamps harness connector terminal A and terminal B of the same connector to the inoperative lamp. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

Important:  Make sure that the headlamp ballast connector retaining clip is fully installed on the Philips system otherwise the ballast will not operate.

Install a known good ballast. Refer to High Intensity Discharge Headlamp Ballast Replacement .

Does the lamp operate properly?

Go to Step 22

Test the battery positve voltage circuit to the headlamp switch for an open, high resistance or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Was a problem found?

Go to Step 15

Disconnect the headlamp switch and test for continuity between the battery positve voltage circuit input terminal and the headlamp switch headlamps on signal output terminal at the headlamp switch with the headlamp switch in the HEAD position. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

Go to Step 10

With the headlamp switch still disconnected, test for continuity between the battery positve voltage circuit input terminal and the headlamp switch ground terminal at the headlamp switch with the headlamp switch in the HEAD position. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

Test the headlamp switch headlamps on signal circuit for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Was a problem found?

Go to Step 16

Test the high beam relay control circuit for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Was a problem found?

Repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in inoperative headlamp ballast supply voltage circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open or high resistance in inoperative headlamp ballast ground circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Repair the open, high resistance or short to ground in the headlamp switch battery positive voltage circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open or high resistance in the headlamp switch headlamps on signal circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the short to ground in the high beam relay control circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the arc tube assembly for the inoperative headlamp. Refer to High Intensity Discharge Headlamp Starter/Arc Tube Replacement .
